Monsoon Menstrual Care: 5 Essential Tips for Maintaining Period Hygiene During the Rainy Season

While the monsoon season brings a refreshing change, it also creates conditions that can lead to increased risk of allergies and infections, particularly during menstruation. The combination of damp clothes, environmental moisture, and the moisture from menstrual products can make women more susceptible to infections. To ensure optimal menstrual hygiene and comfort, it’s crucial to follow these guidelines. Dr. Anuja Thomas, Consultant – Obstetrician & Gynecologist at Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, Mumbai, shares essential tips for managing period hygiene during the monsoon.

Monsoon Menstrual Care Tips

Change Sanitary Products Regularly: During the monsoon, it’s vital to change sanitary napkins, tampons, or menstrual cups every 3-4 hours. Humidity can foster bacterial growth, leading to infections. Always wash your hands after changing these products to prevent the spread of germs. Choose products that suit you best and consult your doctor if necessary.

Keep the Vaginal Area Clean and Dry: Avoid using scented feminine hygiene products that may irritate or disrupt the vaginal pH balance. Maintain cleanliness and dryness in the vaginal area and use hygiene products only after consulting your doctor. Stay hydrated and follow a balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, avoiding irritants like spicy foods, alcohol, and garlic. Refrain from douching as it can lead to infections.

Opt for Cotton Undergarments: Choose breathable cotton underwear over tight nylon clothing. Cotton allows better airflow and helps prevent odor and irritation.

Avoid Shaving: During the monsoon, the moist environment can be ideal for bacterial growth. It’s advisable to avoid shaving the area to prevent irritation and infection. If shaving is necessary, be cautious and consult an expert for suitable products.

Shower Twice Daily: Increased humidity can cause excessive sweating and odor. Shower at least twice a day using unscented soaps or body washes to maintain cleanliness and freshness.

By adhering to these tips, you can manage menstrual hygiene effectively during the monsoon, ensuring comfort and reducing the risk of infections. Stay healthy and enjoy a worry-free period throughout the rainy season.
