Freddie Freeman, the first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers, exited Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres after injuring his right ankle while attempting to beat out a ground ball to second base. During a pivotal five-run seventh inning that gave the Dodgers a 5-2 lead, Freeman hit a sharply struck grounder to the right side. Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth fielded the ball and threw it to first base, but the throw pulled first baseman Luis Arraez off the bag. In an effort to evade the tag, Freeman twisted his body as he ran through the bag, causing him to roll his ankle and fall to the ground after being called out. Despite this setback, the Dodgers went on to win the game 7-2, securing their 11th National League West title in 12 years. Freeman finished the game 1-for-4 and is currently batting .282 for the season, with 22 home runs and 89 RBIs. Over his impressive 15-season career, the eight-time All-Star and 2020 NL MVP boasts a .300 batting average across 2,032 games, hitting 343 home runs and driving in 1,232 RBIs while playing for the Atlanta Braves (2010-21) and the Dodgers. Enrique Hernandez replaced Freeman at first base in the eighth inning.
